Short, nine hole course 5km east of Málaga. An undulating course with small greens, overlooking the sea and surrounding countryside. Opened in 1968 this 2,362m layout forms part of a larger sports club with sailing and tennis also on offer to members. Situated 5km east of Málaga. 9 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 3 - Guadalhorce Golf course. Guadalhorce Golf Course is a parkland course, with wide fairways lined with tough rough and some banks. The front nine flat and wide layout contrasting greatly from the back nine, which is found to have more hazards including lakes and tropical vegetation, and raised greens with sloping banks. 18 holes Par 72 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 4 - Real Club Campo de Malaga Golf Course / Parador The Club de Campo requires strength and strategy to navigate the stands of well-established trees and natural lagoons. Although flat with wide fairways, the trees make things more difficult. Also known as the Parador, it is the oldest course on the Spanish mainland. Designed in 1925, the flat, links-style layout was extensively refurbished before it staged the 2000 Turespaña Masters on the European Tour won by local hero Miguel Ángel Jiménez. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Great natural beauty and panoramic views surround Lauro Golf Course at an altitude of over 300 feet. 27 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Located in the mountains behind Mijas. While it has a magnificent setting with spectacular views, the course demands accuracy, particularly off the tees. The management have made significant investments in recent years to make the original 1993 Seve Ballesteros design friendlier to all standards of golfer. Venue for the Spanish Open 1977, here, the tee shot is of prime importance. A wild drive and all may be lost as trees, woods, rough, bunkers and water are all very much to the fore. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mijas Golf boasts two terrific designs set out by Robert Trent Jones at Los Lagos and Los Olivos. Los Lagos Golf Course Los Lagos, the original course built in the mid-1970s, is a flat, long championship course with water hazards and large greens. Enjoyable for long hitters, but also accommodating to those with a slice. Wide fairways with little rough, means Mijas has become the most successful commercial course on the Costa del Golf. 18 holes Par 71
Los Olivos Golf Course Greens are smaller than at Los Lagos and many are elevated. The par 3 14th is the most spectacular hole with magnificent panoramic views from the raised tees. Mijas Golf is a hospitable club with a pay-as-you-play policy. There are regular competitions to keep everyone interested. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Situated six kilometres inland from La Cala de Mijas, west of Fuengirola, Santana Golf Course and Country Club has breathtaking views of the Mijas mountains. This new course, recently opened in January of 2004, is set within groves of oranges and avocados and the land was formerly an avocado plantation. Santana is a parkland course with wide, well-defined fairways on level terrain, hence it is easily walkable. Water features play an important, though not excessive, part in the overall design. 18 holes Par 72 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ La Cala North Golf Course La Cala North is situated on very hilly terrain! The North course begins with what may be the highest raised tee in existence and finishes with a 'ski slope', dogleg par 5 to a narrow green. In between there are some classic holes that will punish the unwary but are never unfair. The optical illusions created by the general relief of the course, call for careful club selection before every shot, presenting a challenge any good golfer will relish. 18 holes Par 70
La Cala South Golf Course The South Course opened in 1990 and its undulating, spectacular terrain, provides various degrees of difficulty. The 10th is considered La Cala's toughest par 5. At the par 3 11th hole the tee shot must cross a ravine and the second shot must clear water. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 11 - Miraflores Golf Course Miraflores is both beautiful and challenging, especially for those who enjoy their golf with elevated greens and water. Miraflores is one of the Costa del Sol's top leisure and resort developments. Located in the hills above Mijas Costa it offers breathtaking views of the countryside down to the sea. The course has a number of elevated greens, which require some tough walking so a buggy is often a good idea. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ La Siesta is a purpose built golf course located at Calahonda. Although a private club, visitors are welcome. 9 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With short flat fairways and oval greens Artola offers the fully-fledged golfer a reasonably priced practice facility. This 9-hole pitch and putt also provides learners with an opportunity to play at the finer points of chipping and putting without the daunting task of 18 holes alongside more practiced golfers. 9 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inaugurated in April 2001. 18 holes with a par of 71 laid out by little-known Spanish architect Juan Ligues, the course is short but very tight in places. Very scenic course with views to mountains and seas. Buggies obligatory but included in the price of green fee. 18 holes Par 71 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Santa Maria Golf Course traces the contours of a valley and offers distracting views over the Mediterranean. Another design by Antonio Garcia Garrido. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Intersected by the river, Rio Real is basically flat with many trees under which to shelter from the Andalusian sun. Designed by Spain's top architect Javier Arana, Rio Real Golf Course opened in 1965. It follows a gradual incline towards the sea but is otherwise flat. Golf here is a very pleasant experience, offering wonderful views, well established trees and much appreciated shade while the river intersects the course at various points. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 17 - The Marbella Golf and Country Club Once very private but now open to visitors, The Golf Club Marbella is a difficult but enjoyable challenge. Designed by Robert Trent Jones it is a long golf course with opening holes crossed by ravines and gullys, which require accurate and brave tee shots. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 18 - Santa Clara Golf Course Conveniently situated next to main coast road opposite Los Monteros and behind Marbella hospital. This is a commercial course, parkland with little rough which has been well designed so that wide fairways alternate with long par 3s and challenging drives over water hazards. 18 holes Par 71 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Large and guarded greens at the Aloha Golf Course offer a good challenge and each hole offers a different challenge. If you hit straight and manage to stay on the ample fairways you'll be safe. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 20 - Dama de Noche Golf Course This course is for the true golfing addicts and insomniacs, providing a 24-hour golfing paradise. It takes its name from the plant whose intoxicating nocturnal fragrance keeps some of the mosquitoes away. The lighting system is designed to cast no shadows thus giving daylight quality and maximum visibility. 9 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Playing at Las Brisas represents an achievement to any serious golfer. A challenging yet enjoyable experience. This Robert Trent Jones design opened in 1969 and is recognised as one of Europe's finest courses. It hosted the World Cup twice, the Spanish Open three times and as well as the Mediterranean Open. Water is a major feature and must be crossed or avoided on twelve holes. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 22 - Los Naranjos Golf Course Long terraced tees and large greens amidst fragrant orange trees are characteristic of the well-maintained golf course at Los Naranjos. Maximum use has been made of orange trees from which the course gets its name. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An exciting course winding through two valleys that offers impressive views down to the coast. Designed by Seve Ballesteros in 1991, the course appeals to attacking players. Not very long but sometimes tight, with hazards constantly in play which may lead to higher handicap players being over cautious. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 24 - La Zagaleta Golf Course Nestling in the hills above Benahavis, Club de Campo La Zagaleta is an exclusive private golf and country club, and the club remains strictly private for members and their guests. 18 holes Par 70 Strictly Members Only ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Guadalmina North Golf Course Lakes, streams, fountains and the river Rio Guadalmina combine to make golf at Guadalmina Norte a very refreshing experience. Guadalmina now has a total of 45 golf holes - two 18-hole courses and a new 9-hole pitch and putt. It is generally considered to be less difficult than the South Course. Most competitions are played on the North Course. 18 holes Par 70
Guadalmina South Golf Course Wide fairways winding between pine and jacaranda trees temp you at Guadalmina Sur Golf Course, one of the coast's oldest courses. Considered the more difficult of Guadalmina's 45 holes, it is the Costa del Sol's second oldest golf course. The raised greens are an encouragement to attack the pin. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 26 - La Quinta Golf and Country Club La Quinta demands stamina and accuracy from its elevated tees. The Golf School is on hand for those wishing to improve. A challenging course at the top of Marbella's golf valley inaugurated in 1989. Three nine-hole loops, played in different combinations, wind through a large real estate development. A technical course which rewards accuracy rather than long hitting. A variety of hazards come into play from elevated tees with trees, water, sand and streams to negotiate before approaching a good proportion of raised greens. Not too difficult to walk. 18 holes Par 72 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 27 - Marbella Club Golf Course A new golf course in a beautiful setting, this is a very undulating course designed by Dave Thomas. It is situated amidst the hills of Benahavis, therefore affording spectacular views of Gibraltar, the African Coastline, the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains. This course is not open to the general public and gaining access to play is almost impossible unless you take the hotel package. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 28 - Montemayor Golf Course Visitors either love or hate this course, laid out through rocks, gorges and amidst wild vegetation. Target golf with fairly lenient local rules that favour the brave. The club can now be reached via a new, asphalted road and is signposted from the Benahavis road. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Atalaya Old Course Pleasant, flat parkland course with many bunkers, wide fairways and elevated greens. While the experts might find the challenge a little limited, the average club golfer will certainly find it quite enough to handle, as the greens are sharply contoured and quick. Without attaining the standard of some of the other courses in the region, Atalaya has enough going for it to warrant a visit - as its enduring popularity since 1968 will testify. Atalaya Rosner Course A pleasure for the most demanding golfer, Atalaya Rosner Golf Course requires accuracy off the tee and a steady putter on the green. Situated between El Paraíso, Monte Mayor and the Marbella Club Resort, Los Flamingos takes its name from the Los Flamencos lake, around which the complex is designed. There are three courses here in total, with a fourth, Flamingo Norte, due to open in 2005. 2 x 18 holes Par 72 and 1 x 9 holes Par 64 Near San Pedro, approximately 35 minutes drive from our apartment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 31 - El Paraiso Golf Course Good holiday course in a valley surrounded by hills and an abundance of vegetation. Gary Player designed the fast greens and palm-tree lined fairways as long ago as 1974. Member's club where visitors are welcomed. 18 holes Par 72 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Situated between San Pedro Alcantara and Estepona, Coto La Serena is set in a residential area, thus following the tendency to incorporate golf courses into building projects. This course, which serves as a garden for the residents of the urbanisation, also offers peace and quiet in its Japanese-style gardens; a perfect place to relax after a round of golf. A small course, Coto La Serena has nine short holes, dissected in places by various streams, adding a touch of freshness to the attractive surroundings. Precision is required when teeing-off so as to gain a good position on the fairways. The club is private but open to visitors, and the tournaments which it frequently hosts gives the place a friendly and competitive atmosphere . 9 holes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A popular course with a challenging layout, particularly when windy. Greens are of good quality, well designed and interesting to play. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 34 - La Duquesa Golf Course La Duquesa Golf Course is a typical Robert Trent Jones layout demanding concentration and straight driving. Winding around El Hacho beacon hill, overlooking the Mediterranean to Africa, La Duquesa in terms of facilities, is probably the most complete club on the coast, with tennis, squash, gym, sauna, jacuzzi, bowls, yacht harbour and of course, golf. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 35 - La Cañada Golf Course The full length Robert Trent Jones course is located in the hills adjacent to Valderrama and is open to the same winds. A tough test and not recommended for the high handicap golfer. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 36 - Sotogrande Golf Course Sotogrande opened in 1964 and is still voted amongst the top ten courses in Europe. It has well-established vegetation with pine, cork oaks, eucalyptus and palm trees. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Home to the renowned Almenara School of Excellence, Almenara is fully equipped to meet all your needs. The Almenara School of Excellence boasts the most modern golf practice facilities in Southern Spain. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, this is one of Europe's toughest challenges. The famous par 5 17th features a green with bunkers behind and slopes forwards to an emerald lake is the favourite of spectators and the hatred of championship players. 18 holes Par 70 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No. 39 - San Roque Golf Course San Roque course represents an exacting challenge for golfers of all ability, right up to the tricky 18th. The course affords magnificent views over the Mediterranean to Gibraltar. The 13th tee is a classic 'postcard' view.
